23:24

Today we saw the biggest hole in the ground ever. The Grand Canyon. Simply unbelievable. Incredible. Indescribable. BIG! Totally fantastic and utterly awesome. Amazing even. It was just huge.

Grand Canyon, late afternoon

We left Vegas after the $2.39 breakfast buffet at Circus Circus. We drove across the Hoover Dam into Arizona and then on to the canyon. Breathtaking stuff.

We took lots of pictures and saw the sun set over the canyon before heading here to our motel at Flagstaff for the night.

Sunset at the canyon

We got to drive through a wonderful desert thunderstorm (powerful stuff!) before reaching the Canyon - the sky was so dark and the rain so heavy and the lightning so unbelievably bright and big. Spectacular.

[We visited the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, where there is a visitor centre. This is the place where most tourists see the canyon from. As described, the view was spectacular, across the immense canyon to the coloured strata of rock on the other side, and down to the Colorado River winding its way through the huge valley far below.]

[I've thought many times that I saw three of the most amazing natural sights on this trip: the redwood forests, Yosemite Valley, and the Grand Canyon. And I saw them in the right order, because each successive one was more spectacular than the previous.]

Coming back from the Canyon to here, we stopped at the Grand Canyon National Park entrance station to look at the stars. We all saw the most amazing shooting star. It streaked leisurely across a large angle of sky, leaving a bright trail which glowed white, orange, and red, then broke up into discernible fragments which separated along the flight direction and glowed brilliantly before winking out. It must have lasted at least three seconds. It was pretty close.

It's been a magical day. The sights I have seen... the photos I have taken!
