00:30 Monday, Room 652, Red Lion Inn

[Following four entries written by other people.]

Well, I'm here writing stupid things in your travel book, just 'cause I can't think of anything. It was good to meet you in person, finally. I can't wait to meet you on your own turf - it's been one of my dreams, to go to Australia (I know I like the saddles and horses). Better go so others can write - take care of yourself and know you have a place to stay in Albuquerque or San Luis Obispo (when I'm there!). Love, Carin.
David - what to say? I have no idea - I wasn't expecting this. All I can/will say is: I'm sorry we didn't get to spend more time. It's been great meeting you; perhaps next time it'll be your town (I've always wanted to see one of your country's football games). Take care, safe trip, keep in touch. Craig McLaughlin.
Dear DM - After all this time it was a true treat finally meeting you. May the memories you've accumulated during your visit here always bring a smile to your eyes and a warm feeling to your heart. I enjoyed spending the few precious hours I could with you and getting to know you better. Love, SEA. P.S. Find a good safe place for your box of Rice-a-Roni, the Con Francisco treat.
David - Really nice meeting you. Thanks for reminding me of beautiful Australia. In case you forget, I'm Stephanie's friend. Have fun and it was great fun! Lynette.

01:38 Monday, Starport

What a fun day!! Began early with rising and going to the Con. Met Stephanie and Lynette at 09:30 for brunch at Max's Dining Room. Much food! Bagels, cream cheese, smoked salmon, sausages, eggs, prawns, some other fish, three types of cheese, mushroom salad, some other salad, Belgian waffles, maple syrup, strawberry ice cream, orange juice. And that's only what I actually ate! The selection was about four times as big!

Went to some panels: weaponry, fantasy movies, computer art for games. Then met Taldin the Blue Unicorn and Elana. Three of us plus Jesse (with new fangs) went to a nearby Denny's for dinner. Came back in time for the Sci-Fi Match Game! I played in the third round and lost, receiving the consolation prize of Rice-a-Roni (the Con Francisco Treat!) instead of the winner's Ghirardelli chocolate bar. Oh well, at least I won't eat it and will have a souvenir! [Rice-a-Roni is a packet mix of rice and spices, ready to cook. It was developed in San Francisco and is advertised as "The San Francisco Treat". I kept that packet of Rice-a-Roni for a few years, but finally threw it out, as I didn't want it to start attracting vermin. Match Game is the US version of Blankety Blanks, so I was familiar with the game format. Unfortunately the last question I had to answer had an obvious very suggestive answer, but I was too embarrassed to say it as my answer, and so didn't get the points needed to win my round (as most of the "celebrities" picked the obvious suggestive answer). In hindsight, I should have just gone for it. I don't remember exactly what the question was.]

After that, I wandered a bit, seeing if Stephanie was in her room. No luck, so I ended up outside the filk room, where Sally found me. I gave her a backrub while someone looked for Terry (the woman in the wheelchair). Her found, she proceeded to present me with the ceremonial Danger Mouse bubble pistol. Much fun and hugs.

Sally and I wandered the party floor, looking for fun. Scored free root beer floats and sat in on a bit of a Doctor Who episode in one room. Crashed the @! party, where we write our net.addresses on the "who's here" sheet. Sally announced me as the farthest travelled @! person (all the others from the Bay Area), to cheers. [An @! party was a gathering of people with e-mail addresses, which was a relatively rare thing in those days. The parties were arranged electronically on bulletin boards or newsgroups, so the only way to find out about them was by being online.]

We wandered up to the sixth floor to check 652 again, but no luck. Stephanie arrived soon after, but wanted privacy for a conversation with someone for a while. Sally and I obliged, sitting on the floor in the lift foyer, her giving me a wonderful backrub. Collected a stare and comment or two from passers by...

Eventually Stephanie emerged and Sally vanished, promising to bring Murdoch [her cat] tomorrow. Gave Stephanie a backrub in 652 until Craig and Carin arrived. Much hugs and mayhem (and innuendo) until I left to come back to the Starport at about 01:00.

Sleep time... as the rain comes down...
