01:03 Thursday

Well, I've just finished packing.

The plane leaves at 08:50. Allison and I leave here about 06:00. I feel sad about leaving.

I never got to say goodbye properly to Chantal or Carl or Colleen.

Today we lazed until after lunch, when we drove into San Francisco, first going up to the hills on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge for a view of the bridge and the city (through the fog!). [These are the hills of the Marin Headlands.]

Then we went in to the California Academy of Sciences for a look around. Dinner at Uno Pizzeria (voted best pizza in San Francisco in 1985, 86, 87, 88, 89, and 90!) and then off to see the Exploratorium. That was fun.

[Both the Academy of Sciences and the Exploratorium have changed dramatically since my first visit. The Academy of Sciences building was badly damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and although still open for business in this visit in 1990, it was eventually demolished in 2005, to be replaced by a new facility on the same site (which I have visited on later trip). The Exploratorium was originally opened in the Palace of Fine Arts, which is where I saw it on this trip. In 2013 it moved to new premises at Piers 15 and 17 on the Embarcadero (again which I have visited in a later trip).]

Up to Twin Peaks for a final look at the city and then home.

And now, it's almost time to go back to "real" home. Mixed feelings time. I can't wait to get back, but I don't want to leave.
