22:41

An easy day.

We rose late (about 09:00) and prepared for the day slowly. By lunch we were in Hollywood, having seen the La Brea Tar Pits and George C. Page Museum and Beverly Hills.

Mammoth in tar
La Brea Tar Pits

[I was amazed by the La Brea Tar Pits. I'd heard lots about this place and the fossils found here. What I didn't realise was that it's right in the middle of Los Angeles, in a city block surrounded by busy streets and buildings. There are pools of tar oozing up out of the ground right next to the footpaths - and there's even tar oozing up out of the cracks between the concrete in places.]

[We went into the George C. Page Museum, which is adjacent to the tar pits, and has displays of the fossils found in the pits. This was amazing, with well preserved skeletons of mammoths and sabre-tooth cats.]

We ate lunch at McDonalds on Hollywood Boulevard, right next to Marilyn Monroe's star (on the footpath!).

Then we walked up to Hollywood and Vine, and back to the car. We drove up into the Hollywood Hills to see the Hollywood sign. We went out to Santa Monica and then came back here to the motel after getting a quick glimpse of the ocean.

Buying a paper, we decided to see a movie. We went to the Century City 14 cinema and saw Pretty Woman. Good movie. Dinner was from an Italian diner in the attached shopping centre. Then it was home and now to sleep. Tomorrow is an early start for Disneyland!
