Cooler after hot weekend

Not much to talk about today. Thankfully that cool change came through after midnight and dropped the temperature a lot. Today was much more pleasant and comfortable.

I did some ethics classes online in the morning, then headed into the university for today’s Data Engineering lecture. Today’s topic was about data presentation, including tables and graphs.

While there I saw posters up on noticeboards about an anti-Donald-Trump protest rally to be held at the university on Thursday. I don’t know how many people in the USA are aware of this, but people in other countries are organising anti-Trump protests – that’s how awful him and his actions as US President are. And I’ve got to say, a lot of us are wondering where are the protests in the USA? Why aren’t there millions of people cramming the streets? Why haven’t New York and Washington and Los Angeles ground to a halt? Because from here it looks like Americans are okay with the destruction of democracy and society there.

I know a lot of Americans aren’t okay with it. In fact probably all of you who might be reading this. But, like, why isn’t anything happening about it? We’re over here in Australia boycotting US goods and organising protests, and the USA is just radio silence.

  1. I am obviously not from the USA, and I have nothing concrete, but I have seen some reports of protests there.

I think what matters is what media you are following. Many of the ‘big’ ones are owned by people and entities who kind of might not want there to that much accurate reporting of the possible protests. Think Rupert Murdoch or Jeff Bezos here.

Also the White House seems to have taken a somewhat radical stance to journalists. This will affect what gets reported.and how.

  2. Oh, a good chunk of the American population can’t stand the man, even some of the people who voted for him on his claims of fixing the economy.

There are protests, but–as Pare said–even the media that isn’t 100% pro-Trump is being cowed by him. After Trump threatened to deport a legal immigrant over his participating in protests against Trump, we’ve all been rocked back on our heels.

    Fascism sucks.

  3. I’ve been participating in resisting. It just isn’t visible from outside of the actual protests/phone banks/etc. Not much covered.

Republican Congressional representatives are hiding. They won’t meet with constituents, because they get told off by the very Republican voters who elected them.

The thing is, there’s no such thing as a “recall election” for our Congress or the President. We have to hang on until the next elections.

    Maybe.

There are four Special Elections coming up in 2025. They’re all in Republican-leaning districts, but if we can flip three of those seats, suddenly the Democrats control our House of Representatives again.

    1. Yeah, I’ve seen mention of those 2025 Special Elections. From my viewpoint here in Australia, I’m not very confident they will achieve much.

I’m sure there are Americans trying to resist and change things, but there seems to be little coordinated effort so far, and little to no news coverage. I fear Trump and his goons have effectively cowed a lot of people into submission through fear.

  4. Trump has definitely cowed many people, including my own Representative.

On the other hand, the Chief Justice of our Supreme Court just admonished the Trump Administration, which is new. Same person who previously gave him bizarre levels of legal immunity.
