The Demesnes - Money
Introduction
Precious metal coin is used for money in most parts of the Demesnes. Value is determined by composition and weight of
metal, so foreign coins can be exchanged by weight (assuming they are not debased).
Greyhawk
Coins minted by the City of Greyhawk are widespread in the surrounding countries, and familiar to most traders. Greyhawk
currency is known for its reliability - the city takes care to crack down on cutting and debasing operations.
Greyhawk coins come in three main denominations:
- Commons - tiny copper coins, used for small transactions and making small change.
- Nobles - larger silver coins. The most common unit used by merchants. One noble is equal to 12 commons.
- Crowns - gold coins, smaller than a noble. Used infrequently, for large transactions. One crown is equal to 60 nobles.
Additional coins seen occasionally include farthings (a quarter of a common), barons (13 commons), quarter-crowns (15 nobles),
and half-crowns (30 nobles).
